Scouting Report on Four-Star Guard Anthony Harris

Buzz Williams Miami 1 1
For Coach Buzz Williams and the Virginia Tech men’s basketball team, the month of October has been the best recruiting month in years. In the last 20 days, four different recruits from the class of 2019 have committed to Tech. The first commitment came on Oct. 2 from four-star combo guard Anthony Harris from Paul VI Catholic in Fairfax, Va. He is rated as the 64th overall recruit in the nation by 247 Sports Composite, 59th by 247 Sports, and 74th by ESPN. As the highest-rated prospect of the four commitments, Harris is likely to make an immediate impact as a Hokie. The feature that stands out the most about Harris is his athleticism. He is the kind of player that seems to be one step ahead of the opponent at all times. From his highlights, Harris has shown incredible speed, quickness, and leaping ability. His athleticism is similar to that of Hokies’ senior Ahmed Hill. This athleticism makes it easy for Harris to get to the basket. Lacking an elite jump shot, much of his offense comes from attacking the rim. He is very good at getting space from defenders and finishing at the hoop. Though his jump shot is not elite, it is at definitely respectable. He has shown an ability to make jump shots off the dribble from time to time. Should his shot continue to develop, his ability to create on offense has All-ACC potential. At 6’3, 180 lbs., Harris posts a somewhat bigger frame than others at his position. His length and athleticism give him a superior defensive advantage. He is a ball hawk who is adept at picking the opponent’s pocket. Harris is also a strong ball handler and passer. He has shown an ability to run an offense and get teammates involved. Those are not his strongest qualities, but they are still better than most. In high school and AAU ball, Harris has mainly been featured as a point guard. He has all the skills to play the position at the next level. However, it may be tough for Harris to see minutes at point guard in Blacksburg. Though he does have point guard skills, he is not as skilled at the position as Wabissa Bede and Jon Kabongo, the two point guards who will still be on the roster when Harris joins. This should not be a problem for Harris, as Coach Williams likes to run three or four (sometimes five if you count Chris Clarke and PJ Horne as guards) guard lineups. Harris will surely find his way onto the floor. Though he likely won’t be running the point, Williams can still feel comfortable putting the ball in Harris’s hands. Fans in Blacksburg should be very excited about what is to come from Harris. On a team that will likely lose three to four starters, Harris could compete for a starting spot. If you are a Hokie fan, be ready for another star to shine in Anthony Harris. [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OjmT70gmI-g[/embed]
