More big news came out of Blacksburg on Wednesday afternoon as the Richmond Time-Dispatch’s Mike Barber reported that former starting quarterback Josh Jackson has entered his name into the NCAA’s transfer portal.

Three scholarship players have announced their intentions to transfer in the last 24 hours with Jackson being the latest addition to that list. The redshirt sophomore was the starting quarterback for the Hokies in the 2017 season and set school records as a freshman. Jackson threw for 2,991 yards and 20 touchdowns in his freshman season. He also ran the ball 124 times for 324 yards and six touchdowns.
The native of Ann Arbor, Michigan began the 2018 season as Tech’s starting quarterback, but suffered an injury in the game against Old Dominion on Sept. 22. At the time of his injury, he had thrown for 575 yards and five touchdowns while leading the Hokies to wins over Florida State and William and Mary early in the season.
Jackson was replaced by backup Ryan Willis, who had transferred to Virginia Tech from Kansas. Willis went 4-6 as a starter in the 2018 season while throwing for 2,716 yards and 24 touchdowns.
Jackson, Willis and Quincy Patterson were all expected to compete for the starting quarterback job next season. With Jackson seemingly out of the picture now, the battle should come down to Willis and Patterson during spring and summer practices.
