Just when things seemed calm on the transfer front for Virginia Tech, another offensive player has decided to leave. Redshirt freshman quarterback Hendon Hooker announced his intention to transfer via Twitter on Wednesday afternoon.
“Thanks to Coach Fuente, Coach Cornelsen and the Virginia Tech staff for seeing my potential and granting me this opportunity. Also a special thanks to all of the trainers that pushed me day in and day out,” Hooker said in his announcement. “The bond I’ve made with my teammates is unbreakable and I am grateful for the impact this university had on me.”
Hooker, who was a four-star prospect when he committed to Virginia Tech, served as a backup for the Hokies this season. He saw action in six games. The highlight of his season came on a 69-yard touchdown run against William and Mary on Sept. 8.
The 6-4, 225-pound Greensboro, NC native joins Josh Jackson as the second quarterback to transfer this offseason. Both players are part of an exodus that includes wide receivers Sean Savoy and Eric Kumah, tight end Chris Cunningham and running back Deshawn McClease.
With the departure of Hooker, Virginia Tech is down to just two quarterbacks on the roster, Ryan Willis and Quincy Patterson. The Hokies are looking to build at that position, offering a scholarship to 2019 three-star quarterback Knox Kadum on Wednesday. Kadum is currently committed to FCS James Madison.
