Jerod Evans is the 2016 Tech Lunch Pail Offensive Hokie of the Year. [Credit: Harley Taylor][/caption]The 2016 Tech Lunch Pail Awards continue on today as we get to the Offensive Hokie of the Year. The 2016 season saw Virginia Tech undergo an offensive revolution with the Hokies setting new school records for the most points and yards in a single-season with that happening in year 1 of the Justin Fuente era.
Once again, the vote was not unanimous, but the choice definitely earned this honor.
Jerod Evans is the 2016 Tech Lunch Pail Offensive Hokie of the Year after earning the starting QB job less than two weeks before the season started and never looking back. Evans broke his fair share of Virginia Tech single-season records and led the Hokies in passing and rushing with 3,546 passing yards, 29 passing touchdowns, 7 interceptions, and a 63.5% completion rate while also rushing for 846 rushing yards and 12 rushing touchdowns while averaging 4.1 yards per carry.
Evans was the first major recruiting target for Justin Fuente and his staff with the Hokies locking him down quickly on an official visit in December. It took a long time for Evans to win the starting QB job but he never looked back after winning it with any talk of Evans losing the job going away almost immediately on his way to having a very impressive season that should have led him to receiving some sort of All-ACC honors though he was blocked by the top 2 in the Heisman and the current consensus top QB prospect for the 2017 NFL Draft.
Evans had one of the best seasons that a Virginia Tech quarterback has ever had and now heads to the NFL looking to continue his meteoric rise from the JUCO ranks. While Evans for now seems like a late round pick, no one should be surprised if he impresses NFL scouts and rises from the final couple of rounds to
Isaiah Ford was the top competition and had a strong junior season to cap off his Virginia Tech career with 79 catches for 1,094 receiving yards and 7 receiving touchdowns while also breaking Virginia Tech's career records for the most receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns. Ford has left a tremendous legacy in Blacksburg and will likely go down as the greatest wide receiver to ever play in Blacksburg.
Cam Phillips had an impressive season working out of the slot as he had 76 catches for 983 receiving yards and 5 touchdowns in what was a big season for our Breakout Hokie of the Year. Sam Rogers was the Hokies' Swiss army knife this season as he ran for 283 yards and 2 touchdowns while also catching 24 passes for 301 yards and a touchdown plus being a quality blocker in both the passing and running games.
