Virginia Tech got their 2025 transfer class rolling with a commitment from former 757 four-star recruit and Clemson S Sherrod Covil Jr, a veteran backup for the Tigers looking to shine in his final year for a Hokies’ team that was on the hunt to rebuild its safety room around rising sophomore Quentin Reddish. Covil also became the fourth defensive player from VA to transfer to VT from another Power 4 program during Brent Pry’s tenure, joining DE Antwaun Powell-Ryland, DT Kelvin Gilliam (Oklahoma), LB Kaleb Spencer (Miami).
So why did Covil choose the Hokies? Here’s what he had to say.
“I had never visited besides game day. I really didn’t know about Tech, but the staff opened my eyes big time. With my success will come more guys who stay home for our state. I’m going to be a part of the change. I will get some guys to see my success and know there is no need to go outside of the commonwealth. We play great ball in our state and it’s time for it to be VA vs Everybody! The coaches made me a believer and I’ll be that ambassador to help bring us and keep us home,” Covil said.
Seeing other guys return to VA at VT before him like APR, Gilliam, and Spencer also had a big impact on his decision as he told me.
