Five Things to Watch for Virginia Tech Against Rutgers

After suffering a disappointing home loss to Purdue 24-17 in a game that included a near 5.5 hour weather delay, the Hokies head on the road for the first time this season to take on 2-0 Rutgers. So can the Hokies bounce back on the road? Here's my five things to watch for the Hokies vs Rutgers.

1. Who Plays at QB and How Much?

There's layers to this question to say the least as plenty of fans want to see Kyron Drones gets his chance given the struggles of Grant Wells last week against Purdue.

If Grant Wells was healthy, Wells would likely be the starter but the leash would likely be shorter given the struggles he had last week against ODU. The public pressure wouldn't be much of a factor because let's be honest, if a coach getting paid $5 million could be swayed by public pressure after a single bad game, then he's not made for the job.

However, Wells does not seem like he's going to be healthy to go, or it'll at least be a little bit of an uphill climb to get there this week especially with Wells only throwed and not doing much of any movement during portions of practice that some of my colleagues including our Will Locklin got to see on Wednesday.

At this point, it seems very likely that this will be the Kyron Drones show which will given Tech fans a chance to see what the Baylor transfer can bring to the table. Many Tech fans have wondered if this could be like 2019 when Hendon Hooker took over after the Duke loss and never looked back though one X follower of mine mentioned that this could also be a 2015 type scenario when Brenden Motley was serviceable but not an upgrade over Michael Brewer.

Even if Wells ends up being good enough to play, odds are Drones would still play a decent amount given how banged up Wells is. What is certain is that Saturday will likely a big opportunity for Drones to showcase what he can be for the Hokies.
