Thomas is joining the staff at his alma mater, Brookville High School in Lynchburg. This will be Thomas’ first opportunity to get into coaching as he joins the staff for the Bees.
While there have been a couple example of NFL players jumping into the coaching ranks and then returning to the league (Teddy Bridgewater), this does appear to be the end of Thomas’ playing career.
Thomas did have a tremendous career starting with his time at Virginia Tech where he threw for 9,003 yards, 52 touchdowns, and 39 interceptions while running for 1,359 yards and 24 touchdowns in three seasons as the Hokies’ starting quarterback.
After struggling to break into the NFL as a quarterback, Thomas made the change to tight end and was able to be productive at that position for several years (2017-23). That included an impressive 2020 season with Washington where he had 72 catches for 670 yards and six touchdowns.
He currently has 219 catches for 2,002 yards and 16 touchdowns for his NFL career.
