Virginia Tech's disappointing start to the 2024 season got worse Saturday as the Hokies stumbled to a 26-23 defeat against Rutgers where Tech's offensive attack struggled mightily for three quarters before a fourth quarter surge that almost enabled them to steal this game. Meanwhile, Tech’s defense did a great job containing Rutgers RB Kyle Monangai but struggled against the RPO especially one play to the tight end in the flat that kept Rutgers moving on schedule all day.

So with that said, let’s dive into some of my takeaways from the Hokies’ loss to Rutgers.

1. Offensive Line is a Problem Especially In Pass Block

I'm not sure how much we can really talk about Kyron Drones' struggles in the passing game given the reality that Virginia Tech's offensive line continues to be subpar especially with their pass blocking.

There’s plenty of blame to go around for the offensive line struggles between a combination of guys who haven’t developed to some bad decisions once the ball is snapped by offensive linemen and more.

Let’s start with the worst decision of the day which came on fourth and 4 during the first quarter when Rutgers got a free rusher in DE Aaron Lewis despite the fact that they had only brought four.

#1... if I have the right play, I believe that was Braelin Moore's bust. He called the blocking and had them all block right even though Rutgers overloade the left
