One of the bigger news stories of the week for Virginia Tech was their the announcement of their revised football series with Old Dominion, which canceled four of the seven future matchups including all three trips to Norfolk. The move has now given the Hokies an opening to fill on their schedule in 2027, 2028, and 2029 plus a third opening on their 2031 schedule.
Plenty of fans have made their case for different matchups whether that's West Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, or others. The idea of a West Virginia game in particular is one that has lots of fans intrigued given the history of the Black Diamond Trophy even as VT and WVU haven't been in the same conference for over 20 years.
So with all that in mind, here's my thoughts on where the Hokies may go now with a few openings to fill in the coming years.
1. West Virginia Sounds Great But It’s Complicated
There’s been plenty of talk about resuming the VT-West Virginia rivalry as part of this schedule shakeup. The gasoline was already on the fire when Brent Pry says ‘yes’ at ACC Kickoff regarding whether he had interest in getting WVU on future schedules. The cancellation of four future games against ODU was simply the match creating an instant fire of fan interest in this game happening.
One of the current logistical challenges is the fact that West Virginia currently doesn’t have a non-conference opening till 2031. However, VT’s cancellation of multiple future games against ODU shows that can change quickly.
West Virginia also is currently scheduled to play at least 10 total Power 4 opponents in every season through 2032 including 11 total P4 opponents in 2026 and 2032. Would WVU be open to having a couple more seasons with 11 P4 games?
