Hendon Hooker may be the replacement for Jerod Evans. [Credit: Harley Taylor][/caption]The Virginia Tech Hokies dealt with some surprising news yesterday when star quarterback Jerod Evans announced that he would declare for the 2017 NFL Draft, but the Hokies seemed to be preparing for the possibility of this. Before yesterday, Josh Jackson was the only on-scholarship QB guaranteed to be around this spring, but that changed yesterday with some big news from Ryan Bartow of 247 Sports.
Ryan Bartow reported that Virginia Tech's 2017 three-star QB Hendon Hooker is now planning to enroll early at Virginia Tech. Hooker is likely the last 2017 commit to decide to enroll early at Virginia Tech with the knowledge of the Jerod Evans situation likely playing a big factor given how there seemed to be a possible door opening for Hooker to start next fall, which has now come wide open though Josh Jackson still is the favorite.
Hooker has been highly coveted by many programs with 18 offers from a strong list that includes Clemson and South Carolina plus Notre Dame, who seemed in the driver's seat till Virginia Tech had a very strong spring visit, and Oregon and Tennessee who both a push for Hooker this past fall, but were never able to gain any traction.
Hooker was a dual-threat star this past season for Dudley High School in Greensboro, North Carolina leading Dudley to a state title and winning the MVP honors. Hooker has gained plenty of recognition and is a borderline four-star recruit right now that has great size and athleticism that Justin Fuente will be eager to get to work with and develop.
For now, Josh Jackson is still the favorite to win the starting QB job given how Jackson has been in Justin Fuente' system for a full year, but Hendon Hooker will have a legitimate shot at winning this job in part due to how he projects to be a very good dual-threat quarterback at the collegiate level.
