The wait to hear who Virginia Tech's starting quarterback will be is over as Hokies head coach Brent Pry announced today that Marshall transfer Grant Wells will be the starter when Tech opens their season at Old Dominion.
Wells beat out South Carolina transfer Jason Brown for the job in a competition that clearly seemed to be Wells to lose entering the fall after the Marshall transfer had a strong spring. That included a big Spring Game where he went 11-21 for 178 passing yards and 2 long touchdown passes both to Kaleb Smith.
Wells was a two-year starter at Marshall earning All-Conference USA First Team honors and being named the Conference USA Freshman of the Year in 2020 before earning All-Conference USA Honorable Mention honors this past season.
In 10 games in 2020, Wells threw for 2,091 yards with 18 touchdowns to only 9 interceptions while completing 61.1% of his passes. He also ran for 174 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Wells improved in some areas in 2021 throwing for 3,535 yards with a 66.4% completion rate in 13 games plus 16 passing touchdowns and 7 rushing touchdowns. However, he did have some interception issues with 13 last season that Tech will want to minimize albeit without taking away what makes Grant Wells himself as a QB.
We will have more as this story develops.
