Virginia Tech has been busy in the transfer portal, landing commitments from nine transfers so far including five defensive backs plus a pair of running backs, an All-Big 12 offensive guard, and a defensive lineman. Tech has addressed their clear needs at some spots like running back and safety while other places remain glaring needs for the starting lineup and depth can be improved in other spots.
So with that in mind, let's dive into the top remaining transfer portal needs for the Hokies.
4. More Depth and Experience
It's hard to distinguish Virginia Tech's top needs outside of the top few spots. However, there is a commonality of wanting to bring in more depth and increase the total experience with various position groups.
Let's start with wide receiver where the Hokies are losing their four more experienced players and only have one receiver with significant experience in Ayden Greene. While I'm big on the potential of Keylen Adams, Takye Heath, and Chanz Wiggins and believe all three are ready to make a big impact in 2025, bringing in some more experience to pair with those three and Greene does make some sense.
VT is battling Iowa and Memphis for All-SoCon First Team WR Sam Phillips, who would make a strong pairing in the slot with Heath. Meanwhile, VT is among a few Power 4 offers for Virginia Union WR Reginald Vick who would bring some experience and provide further competition with Greene, Adams, and Wiggins among many others for outside receiving reps. Tech has been looking to add a bigger, more physical outside receiver to pair with Wiggins in that regard while complimenting the skill sets of Greene and Adams, with Vick being the latest name to monitor.
Tight end is a room where the Hokies could use more depth with only four notable tight ends returning in Benji Gosnell, Harrison Saint Germain, Zeke Wimbush, and Ja'Ricous Hairston. While Gosnell is a proven TE1 who could be an All-ACC guy in 2025, the Hokies could use some more younger depth in that room, especially after not signing a tight end in the past two recruiting classes.
Adding WVU's Tomas Rimac to pair with Brody Meadows gives the Hokies a formidable offensive guard duo for 2025. However, bringing in another guard to provide more depth and at least push Meadows makes sense. Richmond's Keith Gouveia is a name to monitor who the Hokies appear to be in a good position for if they have the room to take him.
