Virginia Tech’s long search for a defensive coordinator seems to be nearing its end with Aggies Today’s Jaxson Callaway reporting that Texas A&M defensive coordinator Jay Bateman is a “top candidate” for the Hokies’ defensive coordinator opening.

So with that in mind, here’s my look at the case for Jay Bateman as Virginia Tech’s next defensive coordinator.

Positives

Lots of DC Experience

Brent Pry has said that he wants an experienced defensive coordinator and Bateman delivers just that.

Bateman has been the defensive coordinator and/or defensive playcaller at Siena (1999 plus HC from 2000-03), Elon (2006-10), Ball State (2011-13), Army (2014-18), North Carolina (2019-21), and Texas A&M (2024). That’s the type of resume that definitely checks the experience box for Pry.

Bateman also has been relatively successful as he worked his way up the ranks.
