Talented Hartwell, Georgia running back Malachi Thomas remains one of Virginia Tech's top backfield targets with the Hokies continuing to be in strong position for him.

Thomas told us that the Hokies are among seven teams standing out for him along with Kansas State, Duke, East Carolina, Appalachian State, Georgia Southern, and Western Kentucky.

He had this to say about why the Hokies were among those standing out in his recruitment.

"It's because I just love the culture and the honesty that they give out, and how they just stay in contact with me day in and day out," Thomas said.

Additionally, Thomas told us that the Hokies are currently recruiting him the hardest with RBs coach Adam Lechtenberg leading Tech's pursuit of him. He had this to say about what his relationship is like with Lechtenberg.

"It’s a really good relationship. We’re just always honest with each other with where we are at in this time right now with each other," Thomas said.

It doesn't come as a surprise to see the Hokies heavily pursuing the underrated Thomas as he has prvoen to be productive and very versatile, two major pluses for the Hokies.

During the 2019 season, Thomas not only ran for 1,942 yards but also had 638 receiving yards and 282 return on his way to accumulating 36 total touchdowns. That type of versatility makes him a three-down back who could also be a future kick returner for the Hokies, especially given how special teams coordinator James Shibest has a preference for running backs as kick returners.

Looking ahead, a decision may be on the horizion as Thomas told us that he is looking at his birthday, August 9th, as the day to "probably" make his decision. Given what we know at this point, Virginia Tech does look like the frontrunner with Kansas State being the top challenger.

Virginia Tech is in very good shape for Malachi Thomas with the chance to close the deal and land his commitment over the next few weeks.
