Virginia Tech Assistant Kevin Giltner Heavily Linked With Wofford Head Coach Opening

With Virginia Tech officially out of the NCAA Tournament picture, the Hokies may be set to have some staff churn begin in the coming days.

Why? Because VT assistant coach Kevin Giltner has been heavily linked as a serious candidate for the Wofford head coacing job by ESPN's Jeff Borzello and other anonymous coaching industry insiders on social media.

Giltner has been at Tech for four seasons coming with Mike Young from Wofford to be a special assistant in his first season and one of Tech’s three primary assistants for the past three seasons.

Prior to Tech, Giltner was on staff at Wofford for six seasons including as one of the Terriers' three primary assistants for the final 5. He also played at Wofford for four seasons with one season playing professionally in Iceland prior to joining Mike Young's staff.

Rumored names for the Wofford job have all had the common thread of coming off the Mike Young tree which the Terriers seem more than content in continuing on. The Young tree has produced lots of good head coach including Oklahoma State's Mike Boynton, Appalachian State's Dustin Kerns, and Radford's Darris Nichols among others.

Giltner has been a key piece for Young's staff as though Young doesn't have "coordinators" per say, you can see Giltner often holding up a wipeboard with different plays scribbled on it while also sometimes taking a lead role in the huddle. Giltner also has proven himself to be a solid recruiter for the Hokies and would definitely be a great fit for the Terriers.

So will the Mike Young coaching tree be adding at least one new branch this offseason? We may find out soon.
