On Sunday evening, Virginia Tech first baseman Garrett Michel announced his intentions to enter the transfer portal. This news leaves a massive hole on the right side of the infield for the Hokies, where they will likely look to the portal.

In an injury shortened junior season, Michel slashed .272/.398/.468 with two homers and 20 RBI. Over his career, where he only played one full season, he slashed .326/.446/.607 with 17 home runs (11 as a Freshman) and 77 total RBIs.
Michel was in line to start in 2026 and was solid in 2025 before his second consecutive major injury. There is also still a decent possibility that Michel is drafted and gets a good enough offer to turn pro. His decision to enter the portal does not affect his draft status.
I expect Michel to be considered one of the top portal prospects, where he will likely land at an SEC or a fellow ACC program for his final season, should he end up returning to college baseball.
There will be an update to the roster breakdown article within the next 24 or so hours (as of Sunday night).
