For the first time in several years, Virginia Tech Men’s Basketball has a roster that looks less like a traditional lineup and more like a Swiss Army knife with its versatility, length, and interchangeable parts. As head coach Mike Young looks ahead to the 2024–25 season, two adjectives to describe this team keeps surfacing: better and versatile.
“We’re just a better basketball team,” Young said during his summer press conference. “Practice looks different. We move so much better.”
The Hokies’ offseason overhaul wasn’t about simply plugging holes. It was about building a new identity. And with 11 of the 13 scholarship players already on campus, Young is starting to see that vision take shape. The roster now boasts length across every position — every player besides point guard Ben Hammond is 6’4” or taller — and that height brings options, a lot of them.
Leading the charge is Neoklis “Neo” Avdalas, a 6’8” guard/wing out of Greece whose combination of size and skill has few comparisons in college basketball. Avdalas can realistically play the one through three — and even the four if needed.
