Lawal is the first Hokie men’s basketball player to be called up to their national team while they were still at Virginia Tech in recent memory. Former Hokie star Nickeil Alexander-Walker is likely to be part of the Canadian team in the Olympics this summer while former VT WBB All-American Georgia Amoore is under consideration for the Australian national team on the women’s side.
Great Britain may not have earned a spot in the Olympics, but they will play three games against Argentina (July 13), Portugal (July 14), and South Sudan (July 18).
All of this comes after Lawal spent the first two years of his college basketball at VCU averaging 7.7 points and 6.0 rebounds in 18.9 minutes as a sophomore this past season. Lawal is also a tremendous athlete who has a 49.5 inch vertical which is greater than the NBA record of 48 inches.
The 6’8’’ Lawal is expected to have at least a rotational role this upcoming season in the frontcourt with a chance to be a starter at the four. This opportunity should also provide him some valuable experience that should help further his development.
