2019 four-star wing Kevin McCullar released his final five last week and Virginia Tech made the cut while also receiving his final official visit.
The Hokies made the cut for McCullar about a month after initially extending an offer to the talented four-star wing from Texas. Louisville, Texas Tech, Houston, and Kansas State all also made the cut with Louisville being the only school to make the cut that missed the 2018 NCAA Tournament.
So why did Virginia Tech make the final 5 for McCullar?
"Coach Buzz (Williams) has been recruiting me heavily as of late. They emphasize it's more than basketball, and he (Buzz) wants me to come in and make an impact right away," McCullar told us and TexasHoops.com
Buzz Williams and the Hokies have quickly been able to build a strong relationship with McCullar that has allowed VT to make the top 5 and receive an official visit. McCullar also has a a high opinion of Buzz Williams calling him a "great coach" who McCullar believes he could "learn a lot from."
Looking ahead, McCullar's late June official visit will be his first trip to Blacksburg and the four-star wing is looking forward to that visit.
"I’m looking forward to taking my official in June so I can learn more about the team," McCullar said.
The Hokies have the benefit of being able to make the final impression on McCullar before he makes his decision. While McCullar isn't currently sure when he'll make his decision, it wouldn't be surprising to see him make a decision before the end of summer given his plans to enroll at whatever school he chooses next spring.
One unique factor in McCullar's recruitment is the fact that he plans to enroll next spring and redshirt for the rest of the 2018-2019 season instead of waiting to enroll next fall as he told Rivals earlier this month
. At the moment, Virginia Tech does have an open scholarship after Tyrie Jackson
chose to transfer from Virginia Tech to a junior college earlier this month.
Distance is one major difference between Virginia Tech and the rest of the schools that made the cut, but McCullar told us that he is "just looking to find the right fit." However, McCullar does have a connection to Texas Tech as his father played football for the Red Raiders
Virginia Tech has quickly become a factor in Kevin McCullar's recruitment, but has an important official visit coming up that will be critical to their hopes of getting McCullar.
