With Dematrius Davis decommitting from Virginia Tech, the Hokies are once again looking for a QB in the 2021 class after not signing one in the 2020 class. While Davis is still a top overall target, the Hokies are also now in pursuit of another athletic quarterback in Christian Charles who received an offer from VT recently.

Charles told us that he was "incredibly excited" to receive a Virginia Tech offer that was a "blessing and honor" during a phone call with Hokies offensive coordinator Brad Cornlesen. Charles added that he had been in contact with coaches from Virginia Tech for "a while" with an offer making it clear that the Hokies want to add him to their team regardless of position.

His conversation with Cornelsen went well as a whole as he told us it was a "great talk" in part because it wasn't "new territory" given the relationship that they've been building. He also said that his relationship with Cornelsen overall is "very good."

Christian Charles did tell us that Virginia Tech offered him as a QB with some other teams also having done that while some have offered him as an athlete. When asked if he has a positional preference, he had this to say.

"As far as that goes, no. I honestly want to go the school that I have the best opportunity to get a great education first and then after that, the place where I get the best chance to play at the highest level, the NFL. So if I go somewhere and I’m playing quarterback and I get that opportunity, then I'm happy or if I’m playing a different position," Charles said.

One of the challenges that Virginia Tech will have in the short term with Charles is the fact that he hasn't visited Blacksburg yet, something that the Hokies will likely prioritize scheduling for a date that comes right after the end of the current dead period, whenever that may be.

Charles has also seen his recruitment take off in recent weeks with Charles receiving Power 5 offers from Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, Indiana, and Vanderbilt just this month plus Tennessee and Washington State in late April. Even now, there always seem to be recruits who fall through the cracks and while Charles likely would have blown up during camps, it's clear teams have evaluated his tape and found him to be a potential gem.

As Virginia Tech expands their quarterback board, Christian Charles has emerged as a fast-rising athletic quarterback and one of VT's top uncommitted QB targets.
