Ellis joins CB Dante Lovett, WR Tucker Holloway, LB Michael Short, and DE Keyshawn Burgos as Hokies who have entered the transfer portal since Pry’s dismissal. DE James Djonkam has also left the team since then.
Ellis played only four games and is using his redshirt to preserve his final year of eligibility till 2026. During his one season at Tech, he had seven tackles and three pass breakups including the game-sealing pass breakup in the Hokies’ recent victory at NC State.
With Ellis gone, Joseph Reddish likely slides into the regular rotation at nickel alongside Isaiah Cash after Reddish had six tackles including two for loss. Meanwhile, true freshman Sheldon Robinson becomes more solidified as part of Tech’s safety rotation while fellow true freshman Brennan Johnson may also join Robinson in burning his redshirt this year.
It is also important to note that this appears to be the final day of Virginia Tech’s 30-day transfer portal window following Pry’s departure. Anyone wanting to enter the portal now must submit to VT their intent by the end of the day if that is accurate. Paperwork does not have to be complete by that time.
If not, players will have two more windows to enter the transfer portal. The first will be a 15-day window that comes five days after VT hires its new head coach. The second will be the singular CFB-wide transfer portal window on January 2nd-16th.
