Virginia Tech Women’s Basketball made a surprising addition yesterday, landing a commitment from 6’2’’ Slovenian forward Spela Brecelj.
She played for Belgian first division team Kortrijk this past season and averaged 8.7 points and 6.8 rebounds in just over 20 minutes per game. She also represented Slovenia at the Eurobasket U20 Championships this summer and averaged 4.1 points and 5.3 rebounds per game.
She is listed as a guard and forward by VT, which may partly be due to how she has shown some offensive versatility shooting 28.6% from three-point range last season.
She is an intriguing player who should be able to at least work into VT’s rotation at the 4 or 5 especially with her European experience. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Texas Tech transfer Kilah Freelon start at the 5 still with Brecelj and others pushing her for minutes this season.
We will have more as this story develops.
