Virginia Tech DE Target Mattheus Carroll Sets His Decision Date

This has been a big week for Mattheus Carroll and his recruitment that will reach a crescendo this Sunday after Carroll released his top 3 and set a decision date and time.

Carroll had this to say on why each of the schools in his final 3 made the cut ahead of his decision at 3pm tomorrow (5/31).

Virginia Tech: "The combo of (Darryl) Tapp and (Bill) Teerlinck. They have endless amount of knowledge for the game so I am confident that they can develop me fully."

Maryland: "The vision that they are selling is working out for them currently and it's great to see. Seeing the vision working out has been encouraging to see. Also, the ability to play with top player from my hometown is intriguing."

Duke: "Academics, and Coach (David) Cutcliffe and Coach (Ben) Albert have built great relationships with me and my family. Trust and respect is something I value and in meeting Coach, I can firmly say they have earned mine."

Mattheus Carroll also told us what the key factors will be in making his decision.

"Academics and network are big for me as well as coaching relationships and for the university to feel like home," Carroll said.

That is another area where Tech has done well with Carroll as the Hokies have built up strong relationships with the talented defensive end which includes his relationship with Justin Fuente as he previously described to us.

"It's great now that I've gotten to know Coach. I believe and trust in him. He now knows me on a personal level and so do I. I think we’ve built a great relationship," Carroll said.

Virginia Tech has also been pushing harder than anyone with Carroll telling us earlier this month that VT was recruiting him the hardest.

Going into his decision, Virginia Tech does look like the slight favorites to land Carroll because of his relationships with the coaches and belief that the Hokies can develop him into an NFL defensive end. However, Maryland has been on a roll on the recruiting trail and is a serious threat while Duke appears to be the longshot but does have strong relationships with Carroll.

Decision day is arriving for Mattheus Carroll as the Hokies are hoping to land their fourth commitment in 17 days.
