Session III (Quarterfinals and Consolation Second Round)
3:58 p.m. - 174 pounds: Ruiz rides out Desiante to take us to the second period.
3:58 p.m. - 184 pounds: No. 14 Jaden Bullock is up on Mat 6 now against Oklahoma State's No. 22 Zach Ryder.
3:55 p.m. - 174 pounds: No. 25 Sergio Desiante is up now against Cornell's No. 2 Simon Ruiz. Ruiz strikes first with a quick takedown. He puts on a tough ride, looking for near-fall points.
3:54 p.m. - 149 pounds: Gaj works hard to evade Buesgens' pressure and wins it, 6-1 to advance to the Blood Round tonight. Gaj is now 4-0 on the season against the Pack's middleweight.
3:52 p.m. - 157 pounds: Miller drops the bout, 8-3.
3:51 p.m. - 149 pounds: Gaj escapes in the second to go up, 6-1. The score stays there entering the final period.
3:50 p.m. - 157 pounds: Miller is down 7-0 with a minute left in the third. Needs to get on the gas now.
3:48 p.m. - 149 pounds: Gaj opens his lead up to 5-0 in short time in the first. Buesgens escapes to get on the board as time expires.
3:48 p.m. - 157 pounds: Swisher escapes after the restart to extend his lead, then scores another takedown to go up by seven.
3:45 p.m. - 157 pounds: Swisher tallies a quick takedown on the edge. Miller is given a stall warning for inactivity on bottom. The round ends, 3-0, in Swisher's favor.
3:43 p.m. - 157 pounds: No. 14 Ethen Miller is up on Mat 8 against Penn's No. 6 Jude Swisher.
3:42 p.m. - 149 pounds: Just like the last two bouts between these two, Gaj and Buesgens are scrambling early. Gaj gets two bear-fall points before a stalemate is called.
3:39 p.m. - 149 pounds: No. 4 Collin Gaj is up on Mat 7. He faces NC State's No. 5 Koy Buesgens.
3:30 p.m. - 285 pounds: Carroll starts on bottom and escapes quickly. Mullen shoots and forces a stall warning. Carroll scores a final takedown on the side to take the bout, 16-7.
3:26 p.m. - 285 pounds: Mullen escapes and shoots for a double-leg. Carroll works behind him for another takedown and cuts the Hokies' heavyweight. Mullen scores in short time to cut into the deficit. Carroll leads, 12-7, heading into the final frame.
3:23 p.m. - 285 pounds: After another lengthy review, we're back underway. Mullen gets in deep on a shot but Carroll scrambles and secures another takedown from the other side. He leads 9-2 heading into the second.
3:20 p.m. - 285 pounds: Carroll secures a quick takedown to take a 3-0 lead. Mullen escapes to get on the board, but Carroll gets another takedown as the clock ticks under a minute. Caroll leads, 6-2, with 39 seconds left in the first period. A Hokies challenge is underway.
3:15 p.m. - 285 pounds: Mullen is up now on Mat 2.
3:13 p.m. - 285 pounds: No. 16 Jimmy Mullen is on deck on Mat 2, where he'll face Wyoming's No. 19 Christian Carroll.
3:10 p.m. - 197 pounds: Lehman works hard for a takedown on the edge but the action goes out of bounds. He grabs another leg, but Sasso forces a scramble and a stalemate. He can't score again as Lehman takes it, 3-2.
3:05 p.m. - 197 pounds: Sasso pushes the pace and forces a stall warning on Lehman. Sasso gets in deep on a single leg, but he can't finish it in time. We head to the second period.
3:00 p.m. - 197 pounds: Sasso is up on Mat 3 now. They're holding further consolations until the action on Mat 4 wraps up.
2:54 p.m. - 197 pounds: No. 4 Sonny Sasso is on deck on Mat 3. He'll take on No. 19 Zayne Lehman (Ohio).
2:52 p.m. - 184 pounds: Bullock nearly secures a bout-winning takedown, but time expires. Bullock escapes within ten seconds in tiebreakers. Fox chooses neutral to start the second 30-second period, but can't convert as Bullock clinches it, 4-3. Gutsy effort by the Oscar Smith alumnus.
2:47 p.m. - 184 pounds: Bullock escapes quickly to open the third period. Fox battles back and secures a takedown with 32 seconds left. Bullock can't answer, but forces sudden victory with his riding time point with the scored tied at three.
2:44 p.m. - 184 pounds: Bullock puts on a tough ride for the entire second period. That's been his trademark as of late.
2:39 p.m. - 184 pounds: After plenty of hand fighting, we're scoreless after one. Bullock starts the second period on top.
2:35 p.m. - 184 pounds: Bullock is up on Mat 2 now.
2:26 p.m. - 184 pounds: No. 14 Jaden Bullock is in the hole on Mat 2, where he'll face No. 29 Nick Fox (Northern Iowa).
2:17 p.m. - 174 pounds: Takats escapes quickly to cut into his deficit. Takats shoots and misses, allowing Desiante to find an angle and hang on for the 4-3 decision.
2:15 p.m. - 174 pounds: Desiante escapes thirty seconds into the period. He secures a takedown in front of his corner with 30 seconds remaining, but Takats nets a reversal and rides out Desiante to end the period. 4-2 Desiante heading into the third.
2:11 p.m. - 174 pounds: Takats gets in deep on a shot, but Desiante forces a stalemate. No score after one. Desiante starts the second on bottom.
2:07 p.m. - 174 pounds - Desiante is up now.
1:50 p.m. - 174 pounds: No. 25 Sergio Desiante is in the hole on Mat 2. He'll face No. 10 Myles Takats (Bucknell).
1:35 p.m. - 157 pounds: Miller grabs an early takedown, but Lowery escapes and gets one of his own. Miller escapes to even the score. The two slow their pace in neutral about midway through the period. Miller reacts quickly with a takedown and locks up a cradle to earn an emphatic pin on the edge of the mat. Huge moment for the Hokies' steady middleweight.
1:33 p.m. - 157 pounds: Miller is up now.

1:21 p.m. - 149 pounds: Gaj takes it, 13-1, for a major decision. He moves on to Session IV tonight.
1:20 p.m. - 149 pounds: Herman gets in on a leg but can't finish it. Shoots again and Gaj scrambles to secure another takedown. He cuts Herman and gets another score. Looking for a tech fall here.

1:18 p.m. - 149 pounds: Gaj secures a takedown with 1:30 left in the first. He puts on a tough ride and grabs two back points. He's back in another takedown and resumes his ride to end the second.
1:12 p.m. - 149 pounds: Gaj is up now. Even more tape on his ankle today.
1:07 p.m. - 149 pounds: No. 4 Collin Gaj is on deck on Mat 1. He'll face No. 19 Brock Herman (Little Rock).
12:40 p.m. - 133 pounds: In case you weren't tracking, Seidel will face Oklahoma State's top seed Jax Forrest tonight in the semifinals. All-time, Seidel is 0-3 against Forrest, who handed Seidel his lone loss of the year in the VT-OSU dual in Blacksburg. Seidel notched three takedowns in that matchup.
12:34 p.m. - 133 pounds: Seidel grabs another takedown and gets two back points to end it, 16-1. He just put on a clinic against a very good Larkin. The true freshman is now an All-American and moves on to the semifinals tonight.
12:31 p.m. - 133 pounds: Seidel puts on a tough ride and gets three near-fall points to end the period. He's got over two minutes of riding time.
12:29 p.m. - 133 pounds: Restarting now. Call is upheld. Seidel is ahead 8-1.
12:26 p.m. - 133 pounds: Seidel gets in on a single leg and two swipes. Larkin escapes but Seidel is on him again for another takedown and back points. Very nearly scored a pin there. Arizona State challenges.
12:23 p.m. - 133 pounds: Seidel is up now on Mat 4.
12:19 p.m. - 125 pounds: McGowan escapes midway through the period and Ventresca can't corral him. He'll drop to the consolations.
12:17 p.m. - 125 pounds: Ventresca starts on bottom, and McGowan is given his third caution. Ventresca is awarded a point. Ventresca can't get out from under McGowan.
12:14 p.m. - 125 pounds: No score in extra time. Ventresca is heading to tiebreakers for the second time this tournament.
12:12 p.m. - 125 pounds: Ventresca escapes to even the score. Yet again, a Ventresca bout heads to sudden victory.
12:10 p.m. - 125 pounds: McGowan escapes quickly to get on the board. He takes a 1-0 lead into the third.
12:07 p.m. - 125 pounds: Scoreless first period. Ventresca starts the second on top.
12:00 p.m. - 125 pounds: Ventresca is up now on Mat 6. The Hokies are wearing their white and orange singlets, which are a personal favorite of mine.
10:44 a.m. - We're about 15 minutes out from the start of Session III. Ventresca is up on Mat 6, and Seidel is on deck on Mat 4.
