Virginia Tech gained a boost to their pitching staff this weekend as the Hokies landed a commitment from Xavier P Ben Weber.

Thankful for my experience at Xavier and the relationships there that I will cherish forever.

With that being said, I have committed to Virginia Tech for my final year. Go Hokies! pic.twitter.com/Q8T9QUzk1l
— Ben Weber (@BenWeber09) June 28, 2025

The right-handed arm marks the fourth portal and first pitching addition for the Hokies this in the portal window. He joined Belmont INF Pete Daniel, Saint Joseph's INF Owen Petrich, and George Washington OF Sam Gates.
Weber spent the 2025 season with Xavier after he transferred there from Air Force.
A Second Team All-Big East selection, Weber is seasoned and experienced by having with 32 career starts, 56 appearances, and 207 career innings under his belt. Over that time, Weber has a good-not-great 5.43 ERA. He had a five-inning scoreless outing against Vanderbilt and a three-inning scoreless outing against Oregon State.
The 2025 season was the best of his career to date as he was 6-3 over the course of 84.2 innings pitched and 18 appearances with 12 starts while having a 4.15 ERA with opponents only hitting .275 against him.
The thing about Weber that worries me is the lack of swing and miss stuff. He keeps the walks down well, below three per nine innings. However, the strikeout numbers are uninspiring, striking at just 118 career strikeouts in 207 innings (5.13 per 9).
Regardless of anything, Renfrow will be the ace of the rotation. Behind that, things are up in the air. I favor Madden Clement as the second starter, but that's not set in stone. I see the Saturday and Sunday spots being a four-way competition between Weber, Clement, Logan Eisenreich, and Chase Swift. It may help Weber that he has familiarity with the Hokies' new pitching coach Doug Willey, who arrives in Blacksburg from Xavier.

The Hokies seem likely to add more to their pitching staff as the Hokies look to continue to improve their options for next season.
