The 2025 men's college basketball season has arrived so its time to dive into some predictions for the Hokies this season.
Season Prediction: 21-9 (10-8 ACC)
Virginia Tech benefits from a fairly easy non-conference schedule. In the ACC/SEC challenge it faces South Carolina - the last place finisher in the SEC in 2024-25. Other “tests” include Saint Joseph’s and Colorado State - both of which are rebuilding under first-year head coaches.
While this hurts the Hokies chances of proving themselves in the early season or preparing them for difficult ACC matchups down the road, it means Virginia Tech should enter ACC play with a very impressive record, barring multiple upset losses.
The schedule strengthens considerably once ACC play begins with a conference opener against Virginia on New Year’s Eve. The Hokies, who are historically much better on their home floor, will likely split the season series with the Cavaliers and the Wake Forest Demon Deacons - the only two squads they face twice. They will continue their solid play in Cassell (benefiting from a weak home schedule), only losing to Duke.
Road trips will prove to be trickier as the Hokies will lose games at SMU, Louisville, NC State, Miami and North Carolina. Virginia Tech’s signature road win will come at Clemson on February 11, 2026, about a month before the ACC Tournament.
The Hokies will finish in the top half of the ACC with a 10-8 conference record and an impressive 21-9 overall record. This should place them in the NCAA tournament bubble, likely dependent on the quality of the ACC.
