Virginia Tech made a major splash on the recruiting trail landing a commitment from four-star LB Brett Clatterbaugh out of Eastern View HS in Culpeper, VA.

Clatterbaugh chose the Hokies over his other top 5 schools of Georgia, Clemson, Penn State, and Notre Dame plus other offers from Ohio State, North Carolina, Michigan State, South Carolina, West Virginia, Maryland, Wake Forest, Virginia, and more.

He is the fifth commit for the Hokies in their 2025 class joining three fellow Virginians in three-star WR Jayden Anderson, three-star OT Carter Stallard, and three-star DB Knahlij Harrell plus three-star Texan QB Kelden Ryan.

This is a major recruiting victory for the Hokies, as Clatterbaugh is a top 10 in-state recruit for the 247 Sports Composite, ESPN, and Rivals.

He has also been one of Tech's top defensive targets for the 2025 cycle for at least a year as became clear when he visited on the same late January Friday as Davi Belfort last year, sitting right with Brent Pry and Chris Marve for Tech’s wrestling dual meet against NC State that night.

To land the man who clearly seems to be the top mike LB target this cycle is a massive recruiting victory for the Hokies. Add in the type of schools that were also pursuing him and that he's a top 10 in-state recruit, and there's plenty of reason for excitement about his commitment.

Chris Marve has had plenty of questions about his ability to be a big time recruiter, but a recruiting victory like this is a major statement that he can deliver in landing major talents. Shawn Quinn also recruits a lot of the Northern Virginia and Fredericksburg with Eastern View HS and Culpeper likely falling into that as well.

With Clatterbaugh on board, it'll be interesting to see if the Hokies focus more on adding outside linebackers only or still try to add another potential mike LB with a little more versatility to go with Clatterbaugh and an outside LB or two. Noah Chambers out of Maryland would be a name to watch if Tech still wants to add another guy who could play mike LB while Brennan Johnson out of Highland Springs HS is a target to watch regardless as Tech looks to fill out their LB class.
