Virginia Tech will be hosting Indiana WR Donaven McCulley on a visit this weekend, as first reported by Rivals’ Adam Friedman and since confirmed to us by his agent representation.
Interesting, Rivals’ Adam Friedman reporting that Virginia Tech is hosting Indiana transfer WR Donaven McCulley. He had 48 catches for 644 yards and six touchdowns in 2023 for the Hoosiers. Suffered a week 1 injury this season that seems to have buried him down the depth chart https://t.co/FKl3I2JjSR

The 6’5’’, 205-pound McCulley was an All-Big 10 Honorable Mention standout for Indiana last season with 48 catches for 644 yards and six touchdowns. However, he did lose his starting job during the spring following Curt Cignetti’s roster overhaul, with Cignetti and McCulley not always being on the same page at that time per local reports. McCulley suffered an injury week 1 that buried him down the depth chart, with the senior choosing to use his redshirt and enter the transfer portal after appearing in four games this season.
Tech is far from the only major team involved as Michigan was previously set to host him on a visit this weekend, but now is rumored to be doing so next month. Other notable schools mentioned as ones to watch back when McCulley entered the portal as a grad transfer (which allows him to enter outside the portal windows) include Tennessee, Miami, Ole Miss, Colorado, and Cincinnati per On3’s Pete Nakos.
The Hokies have a talented young corps of receivers led by Ayden Greene, Takye Heath, and Keylen Adams that should be able to lead Tech’s WR room well after VT loses Jaylin Lane, Da’Quan Felton, Stephen Gosnell, and Ali Jennings after this season. However, bringing in a proven lead receiver like McCulley who has tremendous size that pairs well with Greene, Heath, and Adams makes sense. He also can be a mentor for Tech’s younger, taller receivers like Chanz Wiggins and Chance Fitzgerald as they step into bigger roles in 2025.
