The injury bug struck the Hokies in their past two games against Georgia Tech and Syracuse, and some of these injuries remain a concern as Virginia Tech prepares for a major battle against the 23rd ranked Clemson Tigers on Saturday.
The two biggest names under the injury microscope are Virginia Tech’s star QB-RB duo of Kyron Drones and Bhayshul Tuten, with head coach Brent Pry providing the following update.
“They’re both questionable right now,” Pry said. “Kyron (is) better than he was last week at this time. Bhayshul (is) yet to be determined. Today we find out a lot. Hopefully by the end of tomorrow we feel good about those guys.”
Drones and Tuten reportedly practiced in full pads on Wednesday, but their status for Saturday still remains to be seen.
With the absence of Drones, backup quarterback Collin Schlee filled in admirably in his first start for the Hokies, but he too got banged up on multiple occasions against Syracuse. However, Schlee appears to be good to go for Saturday according to Pry.
“Yeah I think he’s good to go; He’s cleared to practice today,” Pry told the media. “He’s a little sore from both injuries, (but) he’s a tough guy.”
Schlee finished 16/24 for 206 yards and a touchdown through the air, while adding 54 yards and a touchdown on the ground. The Hokies will need him available and on his game on Saturday if Drones doesn’t progress like Pry hopes this week.
In other injury news, Pry said cornerback Mansoor Delane is also listed as “questionable.” Delane is tied for third in the ACC in interceptions and will be vital against Clemson, who boasts one of the top five passing attacks in the conference. Delane was one of the stars of Saturday’s game with six tackles including 0.5 for loss plus an interception and a forced fumble.
Like Drones and Tuten, Delane was also practicing in full pads on Wednesday according to reports.
