Recruiting can require patience sometimes, especially when you're trying to flip a recruit committed elsewhere who had an offer of yours for a while. The same can be said for the start of Signing Day press conferences.
On this day, Brent Pry was about 40 minutes late to his Signing Day press conference. For Pry though, it was well worth the delay to land one of Tech's top DB targets, three-star CB Jahmari DeLoatch out of Oscar Smith HS in the 757.
"Sorry about the delay. Obviously with good reason, waiting on one more to go public. That was well worth it," Pry said. "The late flip with an in-state guy with Jahmari from the 75. Helps us at an area of need, a talented guy in the secondary and as a returner. A strong student. Looking forward to coaching Jahmari."
The end result of DeLoatch signing with Virginia Tech wasn't a surprise if you back to the end of spring. However, the path of how DeLoatch and the Hokies got to this point proved to be one full of surprises from Cincinnati being the surprising choice initially in the summer to VT landing his signature today despite little buzz entering Signing Day about a potential flip.
So how were the Hokies able to flip DeLoatch, the first Power 4 Signing Day flip of the Brent Pry era?
Well it started with the Hokies continuing to recruit DeLoatch for about six months straight after his Cincinnati commitment, slowly getting closer and closer to a flip before a crucial phone call last night helped push Tech over the top ahead of receiving the good news early this morning.
