Minnesota DL Transfer Gage Keys Recaps "Really Good" Virginia Tech Visit

Gage Keys 1 VT Visit 2022

Virginia Tech has already made some noise in the transfer portal headlined by the commitments of ODU WR Ali Jennings and Baylor QB Kyron Drones along with hosting UNC CB Tony Grimes earlier this week.

They also hosted Minnesota DL Gage Keys earlier this week who told us that he had a "really good" visit to Virginia Tech.

He had this to say about why it was a "really good" visit for him.

"I feel like after speaking to the coaches on what they need and watching film with them. I can see myself excelling in their defensive scheme which is what I am looking for in the portal, a defense where I’m able to use my versatility and skill set to make a lot of plays. The players seem to love it there and I connected well with the staff. After talking with everyone around the program and getting to see it for myself, I can feel the direction it’s headed in which is exciting. That’s why I feel it was a great visit for me," Keys said.

He had this to say about what he did during his visit.

"We toured the campus and facilities, I met with the coaches and watched film with them. I got to hang out with some guys on the defensive line too which was nice," Keys said.

He also spent time with head coach Brent Pry, defensive coordinator Chris Marve, DL coach JC Price, and grad assistant Korey Rush who is basically the assistant DL coach.

He had this say about this time with VT's DL coaches JC Price and Korey Rush.

"It was good. We watched film and they showed me exactly how I’d be able to play in their system. The way the defensive line at VT plays is exactly what my skill set fits which is something that is important to me. They love my film and believe I can come in and have an instant impact. I have a rare athleticism/strength combination and watching the tape, I think all of us can see how productive I could be in it," Keys said.

He had this to say about his time and conversations with Chris Marve.

"It was good. He expressed that he liked my film a lot and thinks I can be very productive in their scheme," Keys said.

He had this to say about his time and conversations with Brent Pry.

"It was good. I got a good sense of how he was by talking to the staff and players. Then actually meeting with him and having conversations with him, you can tell he’s genuine and has a clear vision for the direction the program is going. I like how he has a defensive background and is involved with the defensive line. That’s another thing that gives me confidence that VT can help get me to my ultimate goal of playing in the NFL," Keys said.

Looking ahead, Keys told us that he is visiting Kansas this weekend with the Jayhawks and Hokies separating themselves from a pack that also includes schools like Cincinnati currently. That top 2 separation became clearer after this visit as he shared with us.

"I think this visit definitely cleared up the picture a little bit for me as far as VT and Kansas being my top 2 choices and really focusing on deciding between them. There are other schools like Cincinnati for example that pique my interest but I don’t see many opportunities being better for me than VT and Kansas," Keys said.
