Sam Houston DB Transfer Isaiah Cash Commits to Virginia Tech

Isaiah Cash 1 VT Visit Dec 2024

Virginia Tech's Boxing Day got off to a great start as the Hokies landed a commitment from Sam Houston DB transfer Isaiah Cash as he announced on social media.

Cash chose the Hokies over finalists Houston and USC along with interest from many other programs including Ole Miss, Wisconsin, Georgia Tech, and more. He is the eighth transfer commitment including the fifth DB along with Clemson S Sherrod Covil Jr, ECU CB Isaiah Brown-Murray, Rice S Tyson Flowers, and Wingate DB Joseph Reddish. He has one year of eligibility remaining.

After transferring in from Houston Christian, Cash had an impressive season for Sam Houston with 67 tackles including two for loss plus two interceptions and 10 pass breakups. He also earned a 77.4 season grade from PFF while only missing 3.6% of his tackle attempts and allowing only 26 receptions for 231 yards on 49 targets his direction. Those are some extremely impressive numbers for a safety that should definitely excite Hokie fans.

Cash should not only be in the running to earn the starting job at safety, but also has tons of experience playing at the nickel, something that has been a priority for the Hokies with Dorian Strong moving on to the NFL. Cash played 803 snaps in the slot during his collegiate career so far including 149 this past season for Sam Houston according to PFF.

With Cash on board, I would think that the Hokies would be done in terms of defensive back transfers, or at least DB transfers who only have one year of eligibility remaining. Tech's safety depth chart has been fully overhauled with Cash, Covil, and Flowers joining Quentin Reddish to form the likely two-deep for next season, though don't rule out Braylon Johnson and Sheldon Robinson. Regardless, this will be the deepest safety room that the Hokies have had during Brent Pry's tenure.

Cash also fills the nickel need as well though it is possible that Tech maybe looks to add a cornerback with some nickel background as well to provide lots of versatility. Then again, Tech is also right in contention for New Mexico S Christian Ellis so the Hokies still may not be done at DB.
