Talented Recruits Set to Visit Virginia Tech for "Big Dawg" Junior Day

Chris Cole VT BC 2022

Junior Day season has arrived for Virginia Tech with the Hokies having a pair of Junior Days scheduled for the next two weeks with the first coming on Monday, January 23rd.

Now you may be surprised like I was when you heard that Tech was doing a Junior Day on a Monday, but it's a move to take advantage of the fact that the Hokies can show off Hokie Nation as Virginia Tech men's basketball has a Big Monday showdown with Duke inside Cassell Coliseum.

With that in mind, you'll see that a large number of these targets visiting are from nearby with a few farther away ones also visiting. Overall, it's a strong visit list with plenty of headline names on it.

One of the biggest names is four-star WR Chanz Wiggins out of King George HS in the Fredericksburg area. Wiggins visiting Tech for their first Junior Day of January was previously reported by Steve Wiltfong of 247 Sports.

It's safe to say that Wiggins is one of the top overall targets for Virginia Tech this cycle as a consensus four-star, top 10 in-state recruit. Given the recruiting standard that the Hokies want to get back to, they need to start landing some of the top 10 in-state recruits every year like Wiggins with this being a great start to keep that push going.

Four-star QB Davi Belfort also told me that he is planning to visit Virginia Tech this weekend though he did not specify a day. That has since proven to be a Friday-Saturday visit. Belfort released a top 3 this past week that included the Hokies plus Texas A&M and Michigan State with plans to make a decision in the near future so getting him on campus here is big. The Aggies will be hosting Belfort next weekend and seem like the tougher competition among those other 2 schools for Belfort at the moment.

A trio of standouts within an hour have confirmed their plans to visit for Big Dawg Junior Day in three-star LB Chris Cole and RB Peyton Lewis of Salem, VA and DL Kendal Howard of Daleville, VA. All three are clearly top tier targets at their respective position groups for the Hokies this cycle with Tech leading for Lewis and standing out for Howard. The Hokies are also a top contender along with Vanderbilt for Cole.

A trio of Richmond area standouts will also be visiting in fellow three-star WRs Lamar Booker Jr and Eric Smith plus three-star DB Zahir Rainer. Tech did quite well in Richmond this past cycle and already has momentum for all three of these guys with Booker mentioning VT and Duke as the "main ones" standing out for him recently.

Also on the list is three-star DE Jordan Boyd who is one of two recruits from outside of Virginia currently planning to visiting. The Hokies, Georgia Tech, and Wake Forest are currently the trio of favorites in his recruitment.

There were also a pair of non-2024 recruits on campus in 2025 LB Brett Clatterbaugh and 2026 WR Calerbe Hermane, both of whom visited on Friday-Saturday. Clatterbaugh out of Culpeper, VA is currently on pace to be one of Tech's top overall targets in the 2025 class while Hermane out of Florida has not been offered by Tech yet.

Another name that tweeted out he'll be visiting is three-star WR Keenan Jackson out of Waxhaw, NC. It's his second visit to Blacksburg after visiting in September for a game with Tech clearly emerging as a serious contender in his recruitment.

Here's the current running list of visitors we have. This is based on what recruits or sources have directly told us, what has been publicly tweeted by recruits, or publicly shared by others. This list will be updated as more names pop up.
