Three-Star WR Chance Fitzgerald Commits to Virginia Tech

VT Corps 1 VT Miami 2022 HT

Virginia Tech's impressive December recruiting surge continued today as the Hokies landed a commitment from talented three-star WR Chance Fitzgerald out of Nolensville, TN.

Fitzgerald chose the Hokies over an impressive that also includes Michigan, Oklahoma, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Auburn, Kansas State, Oklahoma State (where he took a late November official visit), Kentucky, Louisville, Pittsburgh, Colorado, Iowa, Minnesota, West Virginia, Syracuse, Houston, and many more.

He is the fourth high school recruit and sixth player to commit to the Hokies within the past joining three-star WR Ayden Greene, three-star RB Jeremiah Coney, three-star QB William Watson III, ODU star WR Ali Jennings, and Baylor QB Kyron Drones.

This is another big time recruiting victory for the Hokies as Fitzgerald immediately becomes one of the Hokies' top rated high school recruits in this class just as Ayden Greene did. Tech beat out some stiff competition as well including a back-to-back playoff team in Michigan plus other big time programs like Oklahoma and Michigan State among numerous others plus Oklahoma State who had hosted him just a week prior to his VT official.

Fontel Mines deserves tons of credit as the Hokies' WRs coach has not only played a huge role helping Tech have a great cycle in his home area of Richmond, but he's also been landing big time talent to upgrade that room. We've seen both proven collegiate talent in Ali Jennings but two of the more highly-regarded recruits in this class in Fitzgerald and Greene, both WRs, all commit in a short time span. Mines' persistence and recruiting ability deserves tons of credit and praise for the job he's done.

Shawn Quinn has also played a big role in recruiting Tennessee and it has paid off in big ways with Fitzgerald being the third Tennessean along with Greene plus the football Mr. Tennessee in three-star OL Lance Williams.

East Tennessee may be in the VT footprint, but it's been an under-recruited region by the Hokies for a long time. Things started to shift under Justin Fuente with this cycle showing that there is not only talent there, but Tech has a lot that appeals to the standout players of that region.

In terms of Fitzgerald, he definitely looks like a player who can come in and play as a freshman after an impressive senior season where he had h88 receptions for 1,348 yards and 17 total touchdowns. The production is impressive but the tape is also really good and though he is 6'3'', he shows great speed and can absolutely be a guy who burns defenses over the top while also making plays on underneath slants and inside screens.

I wouldn't be surprised if Fitzgerald is not only in the two-deep next season, but also pushing for the other starting outside receiver spot opposite Ali Jennings with Da'Wain Lofton in the slot if things stay as they currently are.
