The 6’8’’ Lawal averaged 7.7 points, 6.0 rebounds (including 2.2 offensive rebounds), and 0.9 blocks in 18.9 minutes per game while shooting 66.7% from the field and 66.7% from the free-throw line. He has two years of eligibility remaining.
Lawal is the fifth transfer to commit to the Hokies joining UTSA SG Jordan Ivy-Curry, Charleston All-CAA F Ben Burnham, California SG Rodney Brown Jr, and Temple PG Hysier Miller.
Lawal is known for being a freak athlete who has a massive ceiling and is a very good rebounder and defender. His defensive rating of 96.0 is quite good along with his 1.6 defensive win shares and his 2.4 defensive box score plus/minus.
Meanwhile, his total offensive rebounds ranked third in the Atlantic 10 despite playing just under 19 minutes per game. He also ranked 13th in the A-10 in rebounds per game despite those limited minutes working off the bench.
Lawal was very efficient around the rim though it’s fair to wonder how much ability he has to stretch the floor. Regardless, it’s easy to see how Lawal has massive potential given the athleticism and the efficiency he’s shown.
It’s also fair to see Lawal as more of a rotational guy given that he only has one year of regular playing experience during which he didn’t start once. In many ways, Lawal feels like a Mekhi Long replacement for next season with significant upside given his elite athleticism.
