Back during the summer, I sat down with defensive coordinator Sam Siefkes and asked him about many things including the Hokies' unexpected decision to add three defensive linemen during the spring transfer portal window. In his response, Siefkes shared an intriguing insight into one of his defensive mantras in terms of player personnel on his side of the ball.
"My biggest thing I think just from a recruiting philosophy is that ‘big people win games.’ And that was one of the things that I wanted to continue to address is bringing big people into this program because that is a fundamental philosophy that I have that I feel like if you have big people, it's hard to it's hard to replicate that and so I wanted to bring in those three guys specifically because I think they had attributes that could help aid to what we're doing from a front standpoint. We felt pretty good about what that room brought to us and I think just bringing those three guys in brings another level and all three of them are pretty big dudes when you get around them. And so I think that's that was the big ploy for me was trying to get more size in that room not only in what they bring but also the quantity of the people that are in that room currently," Siefkes said.
