Virginia Tech Makes The Top 5 For SF Target Darren Buchanan Jr

Mike Young 2

After offering rising three-star SF Darren Buchanan Jr just a few weeks ago, Virginia Tech made the top 5 for the standout of Washington D.C.'s Woodrow Wilson HS.

Buchanan's recruitment has clearly become a very regional (and local) battle with D.C. area programs Georgetown, George Mason, and George Washington also making the top 5 along with Rutgers. His cutdown means that several notable offers will most likely miss out on Buchanan unless something drastically changes including Xavier, Seton Hall, Pittsburgh, VCU, Richmond, Loyola-Chicago, St. Bonaventure, and more.

His visit made it clear that Buchanan was one of Tech's top targets to fill out the forwards in this class with four-star guard Rodney Rice, three-star guard MJ Collins, and three-star C Patrick Wessler all signed. One of the biggest things that showed that was the fact that Mike Young and Mike Jones both personally extended the offer in a conversation during his visit.

That was affirmed even more yesterday as well with Young and Jones both in the D.C. area not only to see Rodney Rice but also Darren Buchanan Jr.

Buchanan has undoubtedly emerged as a priority target who would definitely help the Hokies get bigger on the wing as a 6'7'' small forward while also having a big senior season full of double-doubles for Woodrow Wilson HS.

On paper, Virginia Tech feels like a top frontrunner along with Georgetown given their D.C. prominence though Patrick Ewing's future with the Hoyas seems cloudy and though he likely gets at least one more season, that doesn't appear certain at the moment. George Mason could be a sleeper here but may need to rely on some instability at Georgetown and unexpected recruiting target shifts at Virginia Tech though the Patriots shouldn't be underestimated with Kim English at the helm.

Virginia Tech has put themselves right there for Darren Buchanan Jr with a great chance at landing one of their top remaining 2022 targets.
