Just two days after now former Virginia Tech assistant coach Kevin Giltner took the head coaching gig at Wofford, Mike Young found his replacement.
David Moats, Boise State’s former assistant coach, will soon be named assistant coach for the Virginia Tech men’s basketball team according to B.J. Rains, a Boise State beat writer for Bronco Nation News. TLP editor Tim Thomas can confirm Rains' report that VT is hiring Moats.
Moats spent eight seasons on the Broncos staff and the last two seasons as an assistant coach. Boise State has been very successful during his stint, with three NCAA tournament births and a 174-90 record. He stepped down from his position at Boise State in August, making him available for a quick move like this.
Moats has also coached at Weber State and served as the graduate assistant coach at Florida and a student assistant coach at Wyoming.
During recent years at Boise State, Moats played a big role in recruiting, player development, rebounding and scouting.
He has large shoes to fill as Giltner was a longtime colleague of Mike Young, and was heavily relied upon as they both moved from Wofford to Virginia Tech prior to the 2019-20 season.
