The Hokies are currently joined in the field by Auburn, Ohio State, VCU, and Saint Mary's with three more spots still up for grabs. It seems reasonable to expect that two of those open spots will be taken up by teams from the Big 12 and Big East.
It'll be the Hokies' first trip outside the Continental United States for regular season play since the Hokies took part in the 2019 Maui Invitational during the first season of the Mike Young era. This is also the first international regular season trip since the 2014 Cancun Challenge, the first season of the Buzz Williams era.
Even with the emergence of the NIL-driven Las Vegas preseason basketball event, the Battle 4 Atlantis remains one of the premier early season tournaments/round-robin events alongside the Maui Invitational and the new event in Vegas. This should be a tremendous opportunity for the Hokies to pick up a quality win or two for their resume while also not having much risk at taking on a bad loss. This will also be a national showcase opportunity for Tech with the Battle 4 Atlantis games usually on ESPN and ESPN2.
While the dates of this tournament will likely once again fall over the Thanksgiving holiday, the destination nature of this tournament being in the Bahamas likely will appeal to some Hokie fans.
