After taking care of business last night winning their first ACC Tournament title ever, there was no sweating for Virginia Tech as they waited to see where they would be seeded in their fifth-straight contested NCAA Tournament appearance.
Virginia Tech received a 11 seed in the East Region and will face 6 seed Texas in the first round of this year's NCAA Tournament on Friday in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This is the fifth-straight contested NCAA Tournament that Virginia Tech has reached, the longest streak in program history.
Virginia Tech was the 46th ranked overall team by the committee as well with only Notre Dame having a lower overall seed than the Hokies among the at-large teams, a clear sign that Tech probably needed their win against Duke to make the NCAA Tournament.
Surprisingly, this is the first time that Virginia Tech has faced Texas in men's basketball. The Hokies and Longhorns did not share a common opponent this season, but Tech is the hotter team having won 13 of their past 15 while Texas played in one of the best conferences in the country this season finishing 4th in the Big 12 though they enter March Madness on a three-game losing streak.
11 seeds are 54-90 all-time against 6 seeds so to see an 11 take down a 6 is definitely not uncommon whatsoever. This will be one that some may circle given the momentum that the Hokies have had compared to the Longhorns who have had some disappointing losses but also impressive wins over teams like Kansas and Tennessee.
We will have more as this story develops.
