Veteran Virginia Tech safety and former starter Jalen Stroman will enter the transfer portal as initially reported by 247 Sports.
Stroman injured his shoulder in the Hokies’ season opener against Vanderbilt and did not take the field in the maroon and orange for the remainder of the season. He did start against the Commodores and was set to be the veteran leader of Tech’s safety room.
The veteran safety recorded five tackles against the Commodores, contributing to his career in Blacksburg of 111 tackles and two forced fumbles in 36 games with Tech.
Stroman, who only started eight of his 36 games with the Hokies due in part to injuries affecting him the past couple seasons, was seen as a potential starting candidate for 2025 if he returned. He will certainly have lots of Power 4 interest though it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Hokies try to retain Stroman.
With Stroman and Mose Phillips entering the transfer portal, safety now becomes a top transfer priority for Virginia Tech. It seems likely that Tech will look for a one-year guy who can be a high-level starter and a young guy who could compete with that addition and Quentin Reddish while also adding depth.
Old Dominion’s Jahron Manning is a name to watch after the Hokies offered the All-Sun Belt Third Team safety who received an 86.8 PFF grade. Another name to watch is South Florida’s Tawfiq Byard who played at DeMatha Catholic alongside multiple Hokies including Dante Lovett and had an impressive redshirt freshman season for the Bulls.
