Virginia Tech starting safety Mose Phillips announced that he will enter the transfer portal as first reported by On3's Hayes Fawcett.
Phillips started 11 of 12 games for the Hokies this past season, where he recorded 65 tackles, a sack, a forced fumble, and an interception.
His single interception came against Miami’s quarterback Cam Ward in a back-and-fourth shootout in Miami Gardens, where the Hokies fell short on a final second hail mary call. Phillips' interception was the catalyst for the Hokies' comeback early in the second quarter and rattled Ward, who was a Heisman-hopeful candidate at the time.
He made some great strides in his game this season to go from massively struggling as a freshman to being a solid player as a sophomore, albeit being a little inconsistent especially in pass coverage as the season progressed.
The young second-year safety still has two years of eligibility remaining in his collegiate career, where he will choose to spend them away from Blacksburg.
Phillips joins fellow S Jalen Stroman in the transfer portal. That leaves the Hokies with Quentin Reddish as the only safety remaining with significant experience at the spot. Braylon Johnson and Sheldon Robinson can both provide depth though the Hokies would be wise to bring in one or more two guys to supplement including a veteran who can start and a promising young talent to boost the depth.
One guy to watch is Old Dominion's Jahron Manning who earned All-Sun Belt Third Team honors this past season and received a Virginia Tech offer earlier today.
