Virginia Tech sent out lots of offers around the Washington D.C.-Baltimore region recently including one to talented 2024 DE Darien Mayo out of Good Counsel HS in Olney, MD.

Mayo said that it felt "great" to receive an offer from an "awesome school" like Virginia Tech. He had this to say about receiving this offer from offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen during a phone conversation with one of Tech's primary DMV recruiters.
"It was great. He told me they were looking at me for a while and they finally just offered me," Mayo said.
Tech's interest also didn't come out of nowhere as Mayo shared with us.
"They showed a lot of interest. They came to my school to talk to me before and were also at practices," Mayo said.
Bowen was also the lead contact person for Mayo prior to the offer with Mayo saying that he has a "great" relationship with Bowen and praising him as a "really good coach".
The Hokies are the third offer for Mayo and join USC and Maryland on his offer list. Additionally, Mayo is receiving interest from Georgia, Notre Dame, Penn State, and Northwestern as Mayo is showing signs that he will be a national recruit in the 2024 class.
That shouldn't come as a surprise given his freakish size at 6'7'' and 247 pounds according to 247 Sports. This upcoming season also should him a greater opportunity to shine after a promising sophomore season as he shared with us.
"I was behind two juniors last year, but I'm starting this year. Every time I got in the game last year, I made plays," Mayo said.
The good news for the Hokies is that they have a chance to keep making strong early impressions with Mayo visiting Blacksburg June 5th for Tech's camp that day. His camp visit will be his first visit to Blacksburg as well.
So how does this offer impact his recruitment and where Virginia Tech stands in it?
"VT is definitely one of the top schools I'm looking at right now," Mayo said.
It's early, but the Hokies seem poised to be a serious contender for promising 2024 DE Darien Mayo out of Maryland.
