Kayl Petersen is the first Hokie to enter her name into the transfer portal after two years in Blacksburg.
Petersen was a part of Virginia Tech head coach Megan Duffy’s inaugural high school class at Virginia Tech. ESPNW ranked the Wisconsin native 68th in the class of 2024.
The 6-foot big averaged 2.2 points and 2.9 rebounds over 32 games this past season. In the first game of the season against Towson, she put up 17 points and 11 boards in 18 minutes.
She initially was a role player, often entering games as the first center off the bench. As the season went along, though, she started to share more minutes than freshman Aniya Trent. She quickly became another who Duffy could turn to for extended minutes on the floor.
With Petersen entering the transfer portal and Kilah Freelon graduating, the Hokies' frontcourt depth has been diminished somewhat with Trent, Carys Baker, Amani Jenkins, and 2026 recruit Arianna Harris-Mott remaining in the boat. Duffy could dip into the portal for a starting center next year, though it's too early to tell exactly what her roster management strategy will be.
