As spring football gets rolling at Virginia Tech, there are plenty of storylines and plenty of players in fascinating positions from trying to breakthrough into the starting lineup to showing they have a path to earn significant playing some day for the Hokies. So with that in mind, here's a look at four offensive Hokies I have my eye on this spring.
QB Pop Watson
Pop Watson's name may be a surprise, but the offensive coordinator change and the shift that seems likely to follow makes this a big spring for Watson.
On paper, Watson is more of a true dual-threat QB in the style of a Johnny Manziel, known for plenty of ad-libbing at times that can help make him successful.
Meanwhile, Philip Montgomery's best teams have primarily been with pass-first quarterbacks, some of whom who could make plays with their legs but their primary success came as a passer.
Robert Griffin III may have been a great runner too, but his Baylor success was largely due to what he did with his arm. Only Griffin and Nick Florence ran for more than 500 yards in a season among the top quarterbacks that Montgomery has had, showing how Montgomery will lean more on pass-first guys rather than more pure dual-threat or run-first guys.
That raises some questions as to Watson and Montgomery are the right match for each other's strengths.
