Incumbent Grant Wells is expected to be named Virginia Tech's starting quarterback for the Hokies' season opener vs Old Dominion per source to The Tech Lunch Pail.

Wells was considered the favorite over Baylor transfer Kyron Drones entering fall camp with Drones making a run at Wells during August. However, Wells has shown growth with Brent Pry and the Hokies' coaching staff going with their returning starters over the newcomer Drones in this battle.

Pry recently had this to say about the growth he's seen in Wells this offseason.

"I tell you what, again, he's just throwing a very accurate ball. You talk about a guy in man-to-man coverage, which the defense is giving him a bunch of it, he can place the ball where it needs to be. I said that last year. He's one of the more accurate guys I've been around. I think he's making faster decisions. When I stand behind and watch the offense, I realize the guy is coming open, he's seeing it sooner and he's able to kind of throw it in a more timely fashion," Pry said.

Now one difference from last year to this year is the fact that Wells will likely have a shorter leash with Drones as his backup. Pry is also open to playing both with a Drones package definitely possible given what he can do as a true dual-threat QB as Pry mentioned vaguely last week before this decision had been made.

"Absolutely. I think so. It’s hard for me not to think about one of them helping us. They both bring a lot to the table in their own way. So I can see a scenario where that’s the case," Pry said.

We will have more as this story develops.
