Young made the NCAA tourney in 2021 and 2022, the NIT the last two years and is 13-16 this season.
Young will have more NIL resources next season to get…
This comes after Young was only able to retain four scholarship players from his 2023-24 team due largely to a lack of NIL. That included the departures of multiple players to other power conference programs for significantly more NIL opportunities including PG Sean Pedulla (Ole Miss), C Lynn Kidd (Miami), F Tyler Nickel (Vanderbilt), and G MJ Collins (Vanderbilt) among others.
After reaching two NCAA Tournaments and two NITs plus an ACC Tournament title in his first five seasons, the Hokies are 13-16 this season including 8-10 in the ACC with arguably the youngest team in the league. Following Hysier Miller’s preseason dismissal, the Hokies were left with only two players who had averaged more than 20 minutes per game in a single season.
The Hokies have turned things around after a rough non-conference run for this young team where they lost to Jacksonville and were blown out by St Joseph’s most notably. As conference play got going, the Hokies elevated their play and are currently in the top half of the league while pushing some of the ACC’s best teams to the brink inside Cassell Coliseum this season including top 25 Louisville, SMU, and Wake Forest.
You could make a strong case that this is among Mike Young’s best coaching jobs given what he had to work with and the growth this team has showed. Now with more resources, the Hokies should be able to start climbing back up the ACC though this remains a ‘trust but verify’ type deal regarding VT’s NIL support of the men’s basketball program.
