New Hokies OC Philip Montgomery Looks to Unlock Kyron Drones and Virginia Tech's Passing Attack

Virginia Tech’s offensive coordinator search has come to a close as the Hokies announced Phillip Montgomery will be taking over duties as offensive coordinator. Montgomery is a veteran signal caller, well-respected throughout the college football landscape for both his play-calling and quarterback development skills.

While he had mixed results in his eight years as head coach of Tulsa, Montgomery has led some of the most explosive offenses in the country; particularly in his time at Baylor.

Montgomery was co-offensive coordinator and quarterback coach at Baylor from 2008-2011, playing a crucial role in Robert Griffin lll’s Heisman campaign in 2011. Montgomery took the reins as sole offensive coordinator in 2012 and the Bears offense got even better. Baylor finished fourth in points per game in 2012, before leading the country in scoring in Montgomery’s final two years as OC (2013-14).

For all the success that Montgomery has, his ability to have success at Virginia Tech won't just be about his scheme.
