After another sluggish first half, Virginia Tech's offense once again kicked it in gear in the second half with three-straight touchdown drives to open the closing 30 minutes on their way to a 31-14 victory over Marshall.
Here's a look at some of my offensive takeaways from the Hokies' 31-14 victory over Marshall.
1. Offensive Line Struggles
Once again, the offensive line is a weakness for Virginia Tech as though they had a decently good day with their run blocking, their pass blocking was a mess to say the least.
One moment that seemed to epitomize the pass block struggles came early in this game came on the third play of the first drive when Xavier Chaplin switched off the defensive end to assist Layth Ghannam with a delayed linebacker blitz, which seemed to be the lesser issue for Chaplin and the Hokies' OL in that moment by far.
That move didn't make any sense as it created a free rusher going after Kyron Drones though Drones got the pass off before the rusher could even be close enough to get a hit without it being a penalty for being late. Still, that's the type of little thing that makes you scratch your head as either you have an experience offensive line making bad decision or getting confused about whether the RB's release will be delayed or not to assist with pass blocking on that specific play. Whatever the reason for that issue, it's a red flag that doesn't seem like an outlier when evaluating the struggles of this unit.
