Virginia Tech surprised many when they decided to add a running back to its roster this offseason in Louisiana RB Bill Davis. This came as the Hokies had a seemingly clear 1-2 punch to lead the RB room in Marcellous Hawkins and Jeff Overton Jr, with not a lot of room for new faces to break into the battle.
Davis came from a Louisiana program where he had solid production with 750+ rushing yards and 6+ rushing touchdowns each of the past two seasons. He aldo averaged 4.9 yards per carry for his time with the Ragin Cajuns.
He profiled as the frontrunner to be the Hokies’ RB3 and provide a nice challenger for the young Overton, but it was hard to imagine him climbing past that on the depth chart.
However, it was hard to imagine the 5’9’’, 230-pound Davis challenging for a large role in this situation while he was also set to face competition from a mix of younger backs who could box Davis out of a role completely. That immediately put him in a spot of great pressure with the second least eligibility remaining in Tech’s RB room among the five RBs who had been brought to VT on scholarship.
